The CircArts circus training pathway, from 9 months to professional

From first wobble to the world stage

Every student at CircArts follows the same clear path. Start at any age, move up when your skills are ready, and go as far as your dreams take you. Some train once a week for the joy of it. Some become professional circus artists.

The pathway

Seven stages. One community.

Students move up by mastering skills, never by birthdays. When a coach sees you're ready, a coach from the next level does a short check after class.

  1. 1

    9 months to 4 years · with a parent

    Tiny Circus

Babies, toddlers and preschoolers climb, swing, roll and balance on real circus equipment made small and safe. Tiny Explorers (3–4) start taking turns and following their coach on their own.

Ready for the next step when: they turn 5 and love to move.

  2. 2

    Level 1 · Discover · kids 5–11 and adults

    Discover

Everyone's first class. A taste of everything: handstands, tumbling, aerial silk, trapeze, lyra, juggling and balance. Students build foundation strength and find the skills they love most.

Ready to move up when: they have the core strength and confidence for Level 2 skills.

  3. 3

Level 2 · Beginner · teens start here

    Beginner

Students start to specialise in aerial, acro or circus skills. This is where we recommend training 3 times a week. Adding acro to aerial or circus training makes the biggest difference to progress.

Ready to move up when: they achieve their Level 2 skills consistently, with good technique.

  4. 4

    Levels 3–4 · Intermediate

    Intermediate

Students with extensive gymnastics experience often start here. Drops, sequences, round-offs, walkovers and partner balances. Students start linking skills into flowing combinations and performing in our end of year show.

Ready to move up when: skills are polished and show-ready, not just achieved.

  5. 5

    Levels 5–6 · Advanced

    Advanced

High-level aerial, tumbling and hand balancing. Students refine technique, artistry and stage presence, and start building their own acts.

Next: audition for the Aspiring Artist Program or a competition team.

  6. 6

    Ages 8–18 · by audition

    Aspiring Artist Program

Our pre-professional troupe. Specialist training at least 6 hours a week, a ground-based specialty alongside aerial, and original shows created, produced and performed by the students, including Adelaide Fringe every year.

Also by audition: Aerial and Acro Competition Teams. Ages 10+ can join Emerging Leaders, our assistant coaching pathway.

  7. ★

    Professional

    Professional circus artist

CircArts alumni perform with Circus Royale, Eronis Circus, CIRCA and Trash Test Dummies, on cruise ships and international stages, and have trained at NICA. Charli Meath set two Guinness World Records in aerial hoop at our studio.

No uni needed to start: our job is to get you ready for the industry.

How progress works

Progress you can see, every week

Every skill moves through five stages. Students and parents always know what they're working on and what comes next.

  1. Attempting. Learning the shape and the safety.
  2. Achieved. Done it once with good technique.
  3. Consistent. Can do it every time.
  4. Polished. Clean lines, control and confidence.
  5. Show ready. Ready to perform on stage.

Where CircArts students have gone

CircArts has grown my confidence in a way no one could have predicted, from a child that wouldn't speak to anyone outside of my family, to teaching circus at the studio I grew up in, travelling overseas to teach, and landing my first contract with Eronis Circus.
Aisling DonnellanCircArts alumna, Eronis Circus
CircArts prepared her for auditioning and securing a place at NICA. Charli now has a professional career in this industry.
Amanda MeathParent of Charli Meath, 2x Guinness World Record holder
